September marks Pain Awareness Month, a reminder to recognise and address pain early. Dr Dheeraj Dumir, Senior Director – Pain Management, Cardiac Anaesthesia at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, explains that while low back pain is one of the most common complaints at pain clinics, certain “red flags” must never be ignored. These include persistent pain lasting more than a month, age over 50, neurological deficits, history of cancer, prolonged steroid use, immunosuppressive therapy, trauma, unexplained fever, or weight loss. Such warning signs may point to severe conditions like tuberculosis, cancer, or spinal cord compression. Timely diagnosis and treatment are key to preventing lifelong disability and ensuring better recovery.
