Kidney disease in young adults is rising, driven by obesity-related conditions, autoimmune disorders (like IgA nephropathy), genetic factors, and high blood pressure, often leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD). Common symptoms include fatigue, hypertension, swelling (oedema), and changes in urination. Prevention involves maintaining a healthy weight, staying hydrated, and avoiding excessive painkiller use.
Key Causes in Young Adults
- Autoimmune Disorders: Conditions such as lupus and IgA nephropathy cause the immune system to attack the kidneys.
- Genetic Factors: Hereditary conditions like polycystic kidney disease (PKD).
- Lifestyle Factors: Obesity, smoking, and poor diet contribute to early-onset diabetes and hypertension.
- Medication Misuse: Overuse of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
- Structural/Functional Issues: Congenital abnormalities or chronic urinary tract infections.
Symptoms and Warning Signs
- Fatigue and Weakness: Due to toxin buildup or anaemia.
- Oedema: Swelling in legs, ankles, or around the eyes.
- Urinary Changes: Increased, decreased, or foamy urine.
- High Blood Pressure: Often both a symptom and a cause.
- Unexplained nausea or loss of appetite.
Prevention and Management
- Hydration: Ensuring adequate daily water intake.
- Dietary Changes: Reducing salt, sugary drinks, and processed foods.
- Physical Activity: Regular exercise to manage weight and blood pressure.
- Regular Screenings: Routine blood and urine tests to detect early signs, especially if there is a family history.
Early diagnosis with simple urine examination, kidney function tests, and ultrasound imaging is key to preventing or delaying the progression of kidney failure.
Conclusion
Early-onset chronic kidney disease is emerging as a significant public health concern, particularly among young adults. It not only affects physical health but also places substantial psychological, social, and economic strain on individuals and their families. The condition can lead to long-term complications, reduced quality of life, and increased risk of premature mortality. Greater awareness, early detection, lifestyle modification, and timely medical intervention are essential to reduce its long-term impact and improve outcomes for younger populations.
