Cancer can be better understood through a simple analogy — imagine it as a road traffic accident. When you drive under the influence of alcohol, text while driving, or overspeed, you increase your chances of an accident. But that doesn’t mean a sober, law-abiding driver is immune to an accident, nor does it imply that every reckless driver will crash. However, following traffic rules does improve your safety. Similarly, by playing by the rules — adopting a healthy lifestyle, eating a balanced diet, staying active, and avoiding harmful habits — you can reduce the chances of a “cellular accident,” which is what cancer essentially is.

What is Cancer?

To understand cancer better, it’s essential to know that our bodies are made up of millions of cells. These cells naturally die and get replaced by new ones through a process of copying themselves. Think of it as a continuous cycle of life. However, this copying process is not flawless — it’s prone to errors. Fortunately, our genes have built-in safeguards that help correct these errors. If a cell makes a faulty copy, the body’s system steps in to remove it before it can cause any harm.

Cancer occurs when these safeguards fail. A copy is made incorrectly, and instead of being removed, the faulty cell continues to multiply, creating a tumour or, worse, spreading to other parts of the body. While there are many factors that contribute to this cellular “accident,” including genetics, lifestyle, and environment, the best defense is understanding how to reduce risks. This is why prevention is key — just like driving safely helps avoid accidents, a healthy lifestyle can help lower the risk of cancer.

Taking Control: Prevention is the Best Defense

While we can’t always control every risk factor, we can make choices that reduce our chances of developing cancer. Staying active, maintaining a balanced diet, managing stress, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol, and getting regular check-ups are all vital steps in playing by the rules. And while these steps won’t guarantee immunity from cancer, they significantly improve your safety and quality of life.

Remember, it’s not just about the “Why me?” — it’s about understanding what we can control and how we can influence our health in positive ways. Let’s take charge of our well-being and reduce the chances of a cellular accident. After all, it’s always better to follow the rules of the road— both on the highway and in life.
