The monsoon season brings fresh greenery, cool breezes and relief from the summer heat. However, it also creates the perfect environment for various diseases to spread. Stagnant water, high humidity, and sudden weather changes make it easier for mosquitoes and infections to thrive.

By taking simple precautions, you can enjoy the beauty of the monsoon while protecting yourself and your family from seasonal illnesses.

Common Monsoon Diseases and Their Symptoms

Dengue and Malaria

  • Cause: Spread by mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water after rains
  • Symptoms: High fever, body aches, chills, fatigue, rashes, and in some cases, mild bleeding

Chikungunya

  • Cause: Mosquito-borne viral infection that often lingers with discomfort
  • Symptoms: Sudden high fever, severe joint pain, skin rashes, swelling in hands or feet

Gastroenteritis and Typhoid

  • Cause: Eating unhygienic or contaminated food and water
  • Symptoms: Diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps, persistent fever, and weakness

Cold, Flu, and Respiratory Infections

  • Cause: Triggered by sudden drops in temperature and damp weather
  • Symptoms: Runny nose, cough, sore throat, sneezing, mild fever, and breathing difficulties

Leptospirosis

  • Cause: Contact with contaminated water, especially floodwater
  • Symptoms: Fever, severe muscle pain (mainly in the legs), headache, redness in the eyes, and vomiting in some cases

Cholera

  • Cause: Waterborne infection linked to contaminated water and poor sanitation
  • Symptoms: Watery diarrhoea, dehydration, muscle cramps, weakness, and low blood pressure

How to Protect Yourself During Monsoon

Simple preventive measures can go a long way in keeping you safe from monsoon-related diseases:

  • Drink boiled or filtered water to prevent stomach infections like typhoid and cholera
  • Use mosquito repellents, nets, and wear full-sleeved clothes to reduce dengue and malaria risk
  • Avoid direct contact with floodwater; wear boots and wash thoroughly if exposed
  • Maintain good hygiene by washing your hands regularly or using sanitiser
  • Choose home-cooked meals over raw or street food to avoid foodborne infections
  • Strengthen your immunity with warm ginger tea, turmeric milk, and citrus fruits
  • Add natural boosters like garlic and tulsi to your meals for extra protection
  • Consult a doctor if you notice symptoms of any waterborne or mosquito-borne disease

Conclusion

Monsoon can be refreshing, but it also increases the risk of infections and mosquito-borne diseases. By staying cautious, maintaining hygiene, and boosting your immunity, you can enjoy the season without falling sick.
