What is PCOD/PCOS?
Polycystic Ovary Syndrome/ Disease in short is referred to as PCOS/ PCOD
What happens in PCOD/ PCOS?
Excessive amounts of "male" hormones such as testosterone are produced by the ovaries leading to infertility, menstrual irregularity, acne, weight gain and excessive hair growth over face and other parts of the body.
How common is PCOD/ PCOS?
Recent studies have shown the prevalence in young adolescents to be almost ranging from 10 to 36%, making it one of the most common non communicable diseases in India. Every year, 1 million new cases are being diagnosed!
How is PCOD/ PCOS diagnosed?
Diagnosis is based upon the combination of clinical, ultrasound and laboratory features.
What is the ultrasound finding in PCOD/ PCOS?
Multiple fluid filled sacs called cysts (hence the term- polycystic) may be present on the outer surface of one or both ovaries. Ovaries may also be enlarged in size.
What are the associated medical risks with PCOD/ PCOS?
Patients are at risk of infertility, obesity and its associated complications such as sleep disturbances, hypertension and heart disease, depression, endometrial cancer and type 2 Diabetes Mellitus.
What are the lifestyle risk factors for development of PCOD/ PCOS?
Increased consumption of animal proteins, foods with high caloric content, low fat dairy and sodas, refined flour and processed foods, sedentary lifestyle, smoking, lack of proper exercise and diet schedules, strong family history of diabetes, psychological stressors in daily routine, inappropriate sleeping patterns are some of the lifestyle components consistently associated with PCOD/ PCOS.
Is PCOD/ PCOS treatable?
Yes. With a proper combination of a proper exercise schedule directed towards muscle strengthening and weight loss, dietary changes under expert supervision, regularisation of lifestyle, medications as per derangements in hormonal profile as diagnosed and cessation of smoking and intake of processed foods, it is very much possible to prevent worsening of this very common hormonal problem in women.
