Blood pressure is determined by the amount of blood your heart pumps and the amount of resistance to blood flow in your arteries. The more blood your heart pumps and the narrower your artery, the higher is your blood pressure. Higher than normal blood pressure is called hypertension and is a key risk factor for both heart disease and stroke. As an approximate guide, our normal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mmHg.
