Hernia

Overview

Hernia is a medical condition that occurs when an organ pushes through the opening in a tissue or muscle that holds it. For example, a weakened area in the abdomen may result in intestines breaking through. Hernias are most common in the abdomen area and less common in the belly button, groin, and upper thigh. Hernia disease is not life-threatening, but sometimes a surgery needs to be performed to prevent dangerous complications.

It is the most common type of a hernia that occurs in the inguinal canal when the intestines push through the lower abdomen. The inguinal canal is located in the groin area. An inguinal Hernia is most commonly seen in men than in women. In men, it is the area where spermatic cord which holds up the testicles, passes from abdomen to scrotum. In women, inguinal canal abridges a ligament to help keep the uterus in place.

A bulge or a lump in the affected area is the most common symptom of Hernia. A lump on either side of the pubic bone is a sign of an inguinal hernia. When performing a physical activity like standing up, bending down or even coughing, a sharp pain felt through touch will help in diagnosing the type of hernia. In general, there are no specific symptoms. A physical or medical exam will let the doctor know if a person has a hernia. Hernia symptoms include:

  • Pain in the affected area when performing a physical activity
  • Weakness, or feeling of heaviness in the abdominal area
  • Burning sensation in the bulging area
  • Reducing swelling in inguinal region

Hernia treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms and the size of the hernia. A number of treatment options are available like lifestyle changes, surgery and medication.

  • Lifestyle Changes: Hernia will not completely go away with the changes in diet but can treat the symptoms of a hiatal Heavy and large meals need to be avoided, and it is advised not to lie down immediately after the meals. Muscle strengthening exercises without putting pressure on the area are the best option to get relief to a certain extent. However, exercises done improperly can cause the hernia to bulge more, so it is important to be careful. If lifestyle changes do not improve the condition, doctors usually advise going for a surgery.
  • Medication: Over the counter and prescription medicines reduce the acid in the stomach and relieve discomfort. Medicines like antacids and proton pump inhibitors can be taken to improve the symptoms.
